An implant is a titanium post placed in the jaw that takes the place of a tooth root, with a crown, bridge or denture fixed on top of it once the bone has healed around it.
It is the only replacement that loads the bone the way a root does, which is why the bone under it tends to hold its shape. It is also a surgical procedure with a healing period measured in months, not weeks.
