What it is

About dentures.

A full denture replaces every tooth in an arch; a partial replaces some and clasps onto the teeth that remain. Both rest on the gum and are taken out for cleaning.

A new denture takes practice. Speech and eating adapt over weeks, not days, and the first few adjustment appointments are part of the treatment rather than a sign something is wrong. Over years, the ridge underneath shrinks and the denture needs relining or remaking.

Good to know

Expect adjustment appointments — they are part of the treatment.

Clean daily, out of the mouth, and leave them out overnight.

The ridge shrinks over years; relining or remaking follows.

Implant-supported dentures clip in and move far less — worth comparing.

The appointment

What actually happens, in order.

01 Assess

The ridge, the remaining teeth and the bite.

02 Impressions

Several stages of impressions and bite records — the fit depends on them.

03 Try in

A wax try-in so you see the teeth, the shade and the lip support before anything is finished.

04 Fit and adjust

Fitted, then adjusted over the following weeks as it settles.

FAQ

Questions we get.

If yours is not here, ask when you book — it is a better answer in person anyway.

Shade, shape and lip support are chosen with you at a wax try-in, before it is finished, precisely so you can judge that for yourself.

Expect weeks of practice, starting with soft food cut small. A lower full denture is the hardest, because it has the least ridge to hold on to.

A well-fitting denture should not need much. Needing a lot of adhesive usually means it wants relining.
